Park Police patrol the grounds of the White House, which sits on federal park land.
President Barack Obama appeared to be away from the White House at the time of the shooting, based on a pool report from 1:30 p.m. that said he was golfing at Andrews Air Force Base, about 15 miles away.
DC Fire and EMS said one person was transported to a hospital with critical injuries. NBC Washington reported the condition of the person shot was not known.
Members of the White House press corps were told to report to the basement and shelter in place.
Jared Sorhaindo, 29, said he was walking past Pennsylvania Avenue near the White House when Secret Service officers began clearing the area.
“All of a sudden Secret Service start screaming, 'Everybody across the street, now,'” Sorhaindo said. “People were running across Lafayette Park and they cordoned everything off."
This is a developing story.. Check back for details.
