A 46-year-old man was "belligerent to workers" after entering a Food Emporium grocery store on 49th Street and 8th Avenue to buy beer at 8:20 a.m., NYPD Chief of Department James O'Neill said Wednesday. The store workers called police and NYPD officers responded from nearby.
Police wrestled with the man and they fell to the ground, O'Neill said. The NYPD alleges the suspect was holding an 8-inch folding knife when he got up and he refused to drop it.
Two officers then fired a total of nine shots at 8:34 a.m. Responders pronounced the man dead at the scene.
A bullet also grazed a 46-year-old woman, who was taken to Manhattan's Bellevue Hospital. The officer involved in the shooting went to Mount Sinai Roosevelt Hospital, the NYPD told The Huffington Post. Both were treated for minor injuries.
Graphic images on social media showed the man face down on the street with a pool of blood around his head.
Police are still investigating.
