A Dallas Cop Saved This Man's Life As 'The War Began'

A Dallas man says that a quick-thinking police officer saved his life amid the deadly gunfire at the Black Lives Matter protest on Thursday.

Lynn Mays recounted the terrifying sequence of events and the unidentified cop’s heroic actions to Dallas News reporter Caleb Downs. The interview, which can be seen below, was posted to Twitter early Friday.

”All of a sudden we started hearing gunshots, just out of nowhere,” said Mays. “At first, we couldn’t identify it because we weren’t expecting it, and then we started hearing more rapid fire.”

Mays said the officer was standing near him when the shooting began, and immediately pushed him out of the way. “When the officer pushed me out of the way, the next thing you know, we heard ‘officer down,’” he added.

Undercover and uniformed officers then swarmed around the corner, but “froze” and the shootout started, Mays said. “Police officers started shooting in one direction, whoever was shooting started shooting back, and that’s when the war began,” he added.

At least five officers were killed, and six additional officers and a civilian were wounded, in the shooting. Officials say snipers carried out an “ambush-style” attack.
