A 19-year-old American college student who went missing in Italy last week has been found dead in a river in Rome, authorities announced Monday.
The tragic news capped a four-day search for Beau Solomon, who vanished just hours after arriving in the Italian capital Thursday for a study abroad program.
John Cabot University, which the University of Wisconsin-Madison student was due to attend, said the teen went to a pub with friends that night and became separated around 1 a.m. Friday.
Solomon's family, which lives in Spring Green, Wisconsin, told NBC 15 that his credit cards have been used in Milan since his disappearance.
John Cabot University announced the tragic news of his death in a statement Monday. They said his body was found in the Tiber River.
"We express our most heartfelt condolences to the Solomon family and to all those who loved Beau," their statement read.
WLS-TV reported that Solomon's body was found with a head wound.
Solomon's roommate was the first to alert school officials of his disappearance after the teen failed to attend student orientation Friday morning, John Cabot University stated in an earlier release. Local Italian authorities and the American Embassy were both contacted.
Soloman's family arrived in Italy Monday morning, according to WLS.
An investigation is underway.
