Imam Among 2 Men Gunned Down After Prayer In New York City

NEW YORK ― An imam and another man were shot on Saturday when a lone gunman opened fire as the two were leaving prayer services, according to multiple reports. One man was killed.

Witnesses heard several shots fired near the Al-Furqan Jame Masjid Mosque at about 1:50 p.m. in Queens, according to the New York Daily News. The two unidentified men were found lying in a pool of their own blood and witnesses said they’d both been shot in the head.

Police said the lone gunman wasn’t captured but pointed to robbery as the preliminary motivation for the shooting, NBC 4 reports.

That said, dozens of angry Muslim men reportedly gathered at the scene on Saturday afternoon, telling journalists that they suspected a hate crime.

“For no reason,” Kobri Chowdhury, president of another neighborhood mosque, told the Daily News. “[The imam] had finished his prayers ... Somebody else with him. Just a pure, blind, hate crime.”

The New York Post identified one of the victims as Thara Uddin, 60, who was praying with the imam when both were shot. Family members told the paper that Uddin was in critical condition on Saturday afternoon.

Police did not immediately identify the victims or say which man was confirmed dead.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
