A South Carolina mother has been charged with homicide after law enforcement says she killed her toddler by feeding her a teaspoon of salt.

Peyton Martines, 17 months old, died Wednesday at a hospital in the city of Spartanburg, news station WSPA reported. The girl had been admitted on July 31, suffering from salt poisoning that caused seizures and a high fever, according to the AP.

Deputies allege that Peyton’s mother, 23-year-old Kimberly Martines, admitted to feeding her child a teaspoon of salt in order to get the attention of Peyton’s father. The two are married but separated, according to WECT.
